Dental Floss

Dental floss is a tool designed to clean the interdental spaces where individual teeth are in close contact. Regular use of dental floss helps remove dental plaque from the so-called contact points between the teeth, where a regular toothbrush cannot reach.

However, using dental floss correctly is one of the more challenging oral hygiene habits to master. In some areas of the mouth, particularly towards the back, dental floss alone may not be sufficient to clean the interdental space thoroughly. This is mainly due to the anatomy of the teeth and the shape of the interdental spaces. In these cases, an interdental brush is a more suitable option and can clean the space more effectively.

Dental floss is therefore ideal primarily for cleaning tight contacts between the teeth, while interdental brushes are recommended for wider interdental spaces. Toothpicks are generally less effective for cleaning between the teeth.

There are several types of dental floss available. Waxed dental floss is often recommended because it is easier to guide between the teeth. Floss enriched with fluoride is another option and may help protect tooth enamel.

To avoid injuring the gums and ensure that cleaning is truly effective, it is important to learn the correct technique for using dental floss. A dental hygienist can help you practise the technique during a dental hygiene appointment.
